Cafe Europa

Cafe Europa in Charlottesville: Majorca Panini and Tomato Basil Soup

From here on out, I will mostly be writing about and from Charlottesville, VA. I’ve  been back at school for about a month already, and I have this list of foodie ventures that I need to post about, but school has been keeping me busy (I had THREE exams today and a paper due tomorrow!!).

Charlottesville is a pretty small place, but there are SO MANY amazing places to eat. I remember reading somewhere that Charlottesville has more restaurants per capita than New York City. Don’t quote me on that, but the point is: there are a lot of wonderful restaurants here. I LOVE IT!!! I’ve made a goal of mine to eat at as many restaurants as I can here during the rest of my college years. Now, onto Café Europa!

After an epic afternoon of Wal-Mart, poster making, and teasing certain people, CM, JW, and I went to Café Europa for dinner, which is a Greek/Mediterranean restaurant on the Corner. For those who don’t know, the Corner is basically a street of restaurants and some shops that mainly caters to college kids, meaning it’s super cheap but still delicious. I have heard great things about Café Europa and especially about their tomato basil soup, so I really wanted to try it out. When we walked up to the counter to order, the guy, whom I’m guessing is the owner, asked us if we wanted to take a chance and let him surprise us with something scrumptious. He asked us if we wanted something hot or cold, meat or no meat, spicy or not spicy, and with a soup or salad. And with those few instructions, he set off to create us a special treat. I was extremely tickled and very excited by this spontaneous way of ordering. He also said that if we don’t like it, we don’t have to pay, and if we love it, we’ll have to pay double. Hahaha I love this guy.

DSCN0965JW and I ended up with a Majorca Panini, which had chicken, mozzarella, and chipotle sauce. It was so good, especially the bread. I will go back just for that bread.

My tomato basil soup, however, was kind of a letdown. I only drank half of it because it just wasn’t that good. I don’t understand why so many people like it.

CM had a Panini as well. I tried a bite of hers, and it had prosciutto ham, mozzarella, basil, and some other stuff that I can’t remember. It was very good. I would get it the next time I go. And yes, this place merits a “next time.” The food was delicious, and the owner was just too adorable. He taught me how to say “thank you” in Greek. Efharisto!
